Smoking

Danny and I have been talking about smoking a lot the last couple days.  No, we aren't discussing the possibilities of us taking up smoking--we're just noticing it more because we're travelling and since we both work in smoke-free environments, it's pretty shocking to our nostrils...and our lungs.

I swore I wasn't going to blog while we are on our romantic getaway but I really needed to just get this off my chest.  I HATE it when people smoke in public!! In my opinion, it is one of the most irresponsible things you can do.  It's disrespectful to the people around who CHOOSE not to smoke because they want to live a healthier lifestyle...studies have shown that 2nd hand smoke does more damage than 1st hand smoke.  That is just wrong. So should we smoke to avoid getting cancer?

I find it interesting that even thought there are designated smoking spots for people, they can't walk all the way over to them.  Walking 25 feet is just too far.  they have to stop right by the entrance of a building.  The worst case? Hospitals.  WHAT THE HECK?! I also hate walking through a cloud of smoke just to walk in to a grocery store.

I feel so bad for children whose parents smoke. Those parents are slowly killing their own kids because of their stupid addiction.  I realize I'm being very abrasive but this is truly how I feel.  If someone wants to drink and be a raging alcoholic--by all means...be one.  At least they aren't dragging anyone down with them.  If someone wants to get high and lay around the house all day--more power to them (obviously I'm being sarcastic) because at least they aren't making everyone around them high.  Smoking is just one of those vices that REALLY can't be kept to yourself.  Your clothes will smell like smoke, your furniture, car, personal belongings and not only that but your teeth will turn yellow and your lungs will turn a nasty shade of DEATH black.  My point is this: As long as drunks aren't out on the streets, let them drink.  If druggies aren't out of the house causing havoc, sniff your cocaine.  I don't want to be a part of somebody's nicotine addiction!

This is a real issue for me. If you can't tell it's one of my biggest pet peeves. I'm sure there are people out there who smoke and who are trying to quit.  I wish them the best because from what I understand it is a VERY difficult thing to do.  However, when I hear of someone celebrating a non-smoking anniversary I just want to hug them and say "thank you".  There are good people who smoke and who do everything they can not to let it affect other people.  I'm grateful for those types of smokers.  I know it must be a hard habit to break--but if they were to imagine their loved ones dying from their second hand smoke, it might make the process easier!

So, for all the smokers who are walking around Disneyland, secretly puffing your smoke in peoples' (especially kids') faces because you're too lazy to go find a smoking area, just know that I believe in karma...

Want to know something funny? Somehow I ran into this blog called http://whyihatesmoking.blogspot.com.  Maybe I'll volunteer to be an additional column writer.

I can't stand it either! I'm super sensitive to the smell and it drives me crazy. I seriously think I'm allergic to it. Plus, it's really rude to ruin the air for others.
I had my cardiology appointment a few days ago and then ran to some stores afterward. I saw several people smoking and just wanted to scream at them: Are you trying to get heart disease or lung cancer?!?! Just stop smoking already, dang it!
One of the times I was most irritated about the smoking thing...saw a pregnant lady smoking outside of the OB office. Really? Are you kidding me? I could have slapped her.
Maybe I could be a columnist for that blog too :)

I know I am the odd ball out, but I don't mind at all when people smoke... because I like the smell. Crazy, I know. But if I wasn't Mormon (or smart) I would be a chain smoker.

(I almost didn't comment... because it's a lame to disagree with such a valid pet peeve, but one of my pet peeves is people not commenting.. so I did.)

Have a great time at D-land. Did you go without Cole?????

Oh my gosh, I was just thinking about this. As you know, we just got back from Disneyland. We stopped at Vegas on the way and holy crap, just walking into the hotel was horrible. I'm thinking I don't like Vegas. Then as we were walking with a group of people to the gates os Disneyland, pushing our kids in the stroller, and me being pregnant, a couple of people are puffing away through the crowd. At one point I had to cover my mouth and nose. Then we were waiting in line for a ride and I saw a couple smoking while standing next to their two little girls. Ugh, there should be a law against smoking around kids!

Oh and I forgot to mention the time we came out of our hotel room to find the man staying next to us, smoking by our door.

It's OK Janet, if I weren't Mormon, I'd probably be an alcoholic...
Amen, that is so funny we went to Mesquite for the weekend and I felt the exact same. The worst was that we had Lydia with us so I felt like a bad parent walking through the casino, we kept saying hold your breath Lydia (ha ha ha!) Anyways glad to see other people feel the same!

The other day I was walking into work (at the hospital) and this guy was smoking under the covered walkway that leads right to the door. I told him to go to the smoking area. He told me to mind my own business. I then showed him my work badge and said it was my business. He was super mad. And as luck would have it, he ended up being the son of one of my patients. AWKWARD!
Here is my opinion. I don't care if it's snowing and you need to smoke. Please smoke where you belong and don't contaminate the rest of us.

nuts. i guess we can't be friends anymore, because i think smoking is sexy and glam. and there's no actual evidence that it actually harms people's health. emphysema? lung cancer? sheer coincidence.

oh, and it smells good, too, and yellow teeth are quite attractive.
