Sleepless in Salt Lake

It's official--I'm nocturnal. I just know it. I have somehow been bitten by a bat or something. I have the most ridiculous time sleeping...at night. During the day? Yeah--no problem. But as soon as I get in bed after a long day--I just lay there. And worry. And fret. And worry some more. I've even tried meditation. That sort of works for a while, until I realize I'm replaying the entire episode of The Office from Thursday night in my head. Here's the thing: I've tried everything. Like depriving myself of sleep during the day so that I'll be dreadfully tired once night comes, but it doesn't work! It is seriously the weirdest thing. I've always considered myself somewhat of a night owl. But this is taking it to the next level. The psycho owl level. It doesn't help that Danny quite literally can fall asleep in a minute or two. We'll say our goodnights, out goes the light--and whamo. He's sleeping. It's not even the light sleep where he's still semi-conscious of what's going on. He's really gone. Has anyone else ever experienced this? I don't like taking sleeping pills, because then the next day I feel wasted and groggy--and it's hard to get back to normal. What's a girl to do? I also don't want to have to get on prescription medicine for this, because I don't want to have to depend on drugs to help me sleep. Maybe if we eliminate my worries, I'll be able to sleep. Would anyone like to donate a small fortune (to the tune of $100,000) to us? Thanks so much.

Rae, as much as I love you, I don't have $100,000.00 to give you and have been trying to have someone give that much to me, too! I don't want to dampen your hopes but it has been in vain. Nonetheless, I have had trouble sleeping in the past and I went on a research binge and what I found were little tidbits of info that helped like consuming dairy products closer to bedtime, staying away from the computer/work at night, listen to calming music/sounds when you go to bed, adjusting the temps of your home at night so you're not too hot or too cold, and, yes, meditating can help. I sometimes took melatonin at night every once in a while because it isn't habit forming and it's gentle on your system. I don't take it all the time...just when I'm having a bad night and I know I need to be alert in the morning. If you do take melatonin you should go right to bed and stay there otherwise it won't work. I hope those little tips help...I know there's others, I just can't remember them at the top of my head. Oh yeah...if you drink lots of caffeine (like I do) it makes sleeping difficult at night. Ok, that's all I remember. Good luck!

Sorry Rae. Can't help. 1. I don't have $100,000 and 2. I'm like Danny - out as soon as the light is off. I can sleep just about anywhere.

When I was in college and had some time between classes, I'd lay down on the grass in the quad and go to sleep. I figured when the next round of classes got out, the hordes of people leaving the buildings would wake me. Sure enough, they did. Worked like a charm.

So I guess what I'm suggesting is that you should try sleeping in public.

Namaste.

It is soooo frustrating to not be able to fall asleep quickly/easily. I have that problem often. Travis is exactly like Danny too. It's so aggravating sometimes! I'm not really any help, but I feel your pain! We're excited to see you guys on Friday!

Rub pure lavender oil on the bottom of your feet, that should make you very sleepy. It works great for kids too!

hey raelynn... my husband actually has the hardest time sleeping. He has so some much anxiety with work, etc. He also has high blood pressure too and the lack of sleep doesn't help so the dr prescribed him ambien and it works great! I've taken a half of pill every now and then and it works and you actually feel rested when you wake up and not drowsy. It's supposedly not addictive and Jason tries to only take a couple a week when he really needs sleep. I don't know... it might be worth looking into. No I'm not trying to promote drugs, just trying to help you with your lack of sleep. Not sleeping is the worst!

my worries are similar I believe...

btw, Molly did a post on insomnia awhile back, not that it's the same thing, but here's the link anyway. (All the useful tips are in the comments.)

When I was a kid I was always the last one asleep at sleepovers. It was rough. I can't even tell you how many times I saw the Bissell Big Green Clean Machine infomercial...ahhh the memories of my youth.
