Bragging Rights & Cuteness

This weekend we celebrate my Grandpa Egan's 80th birthday!! He is in great health and it was fun to watch him see old friends and family who he doesn't see often. He is moving in with my parents and the open house was held there. Their basement will be done this week, and he will be a Riverton resident in no time! My mom hired Danny to make a big cake for the event. It was a surprise for Grandpa. We wanted it to be really classy, yet fun. I mean, 80 is a big deal! It is very similar to some other cakes he has done, but he has never done the frosted swirls on the fondant.

This is why making cakes is a big deal: Danny has NO professional training at all. He is completely self-taught. People think that because he went to culinary school, he was instructed on how to do this. He was being taught french cooking from a certified Le Cordon Bleu school--not how to decorate cakes. But, it was while he was in school that he discovered his talent and affinity for pastries. So, that is why I am extremely proud of Danny. He's pretty much the smartest and most creative person I know.

After the crowds died done--Cole and Spencer did what they do best: make messes. Since they are the only boy cousins their age on my side of the family (that don't live in California) they have become good little buddies. As long as toys aren't involved they get a long great. They are especially good at throwing rocks into muddy puddles, chucking wood chips at each other, and licking up rain gutter water. Gross. Yes, I will probably regret letting Cole do that (especially because Spencer followed suit) but also because now he thinks it's cool to drink from girly water fountains.

Goodness Danny! I'm impressed I don't think I've ever seen your cakes! That one is a-maz-ing! You know David is turning 30 this year... You want to make him his bday cake? You think you can send it Fedex?

Awesome job, once again Danny! I didn't know that he was self-taught! I assumed like everyone else that they taught him at the culinary school. That is seriously amazing! And Cole is cute and up to his little boy hijinx it looks like. I still can't get over those adorable dimples. :)

i wish i lived there, cause i'd seriously go door to door with pictures of his cakes to drum up business, because i'm positive that he could be the next Duff Goldman.

p.s. Cole is so cute. ALWAYS.

That cake looks awesome! Well done, Danny. And, of course, Cole is such a cutie!
You know, if you guys had stayed in AZ you could have had a great cake business in the east valley with all the referrals from us LDS folk. Want to move back?! Plus, we have a gazillion resorts and yummy restaurants where Danny could become head chef. Sounds like a plan to me! (Okay, just kidding. I know you love Utah.)

WOW- and that's how the pro's make a cake. Next birthday, I'm blogging in a cake request so that I can stop humiliating myself with betty crocker confetti cakes that are always asymetrical. You must be the luckiest gal on earth to be married to a guy that makes tasty treats! YUMMY!!

that is the best cake ever...I had no idea he could do that!! That seriously is so cool. YOu could make so much money, just on the cake. HOw long does it take?

Gosh, it takes a while. Total it probably takes about 6 hours? I'm kind of just taking a shot in the dark, but that seems about right. It also depends on the cake, some take longer, and some are quicker. It just depends if it has fondant, how many flavors it has, what types of fillings it has, etc.

That cake is beautiful. It makes me want to cry! I asked for a square cake at my wedding and I was told it wasn't possible. 6 months later at my friend's wedding, the same lady did the most beautiful square cake I'd ever seen. I guess I still haven't gotten over it...

Your husband is VERY talented!
