The night before Cole's birthday was spent with his favorite person outside our immediate family: Nate. He slept over at Greg and Angie's and woke up to a special birthday present {which was totally thoughtful and sweet of them}. This wooden sign is used as a birthday tradition with G&A. They sent us these pics which I thought was so awesome of them. I'm so glad we've been able to live close to them because Cole has loved being so close to Nate and going to the same school.
When we brought him home, he had a quick practice at the church for the Primary Program and while Danny was with him at the church, I quickly put up some balloons and tried to festivize the house. When he got home, he was READY to open some presents. We did about half and saved the rest for when family was coming over that evening.

Not sure when this happened but this is his new favorite pose.
Cole was playing inside the house with his new bow and right after Danny told him he should play outside, he shot one last arrow and it hit me square in the belly. It hurt. And I tried really hard not to cry. He felt terrible and I said it was okay and then went in the bathroom and bawled. It hurt pretty bad and I was already feeling emotional about Cole turning 8 and somehow the physical pain opened a floodgate of emotions. 15 minutes later, I emerged from the bathroom and decided that while Cole and Danny put together his new Lego set, I was going to get a pedicure, dangit. I went all summer with nasty feet and was about to have major surgery. I deserved it.

Yes, I got a pedi with hairy legs. I'm sure it wasn't the first time for him. Heh. At least I hope not.
This picture reminds me of the part on Dumb & Dumber when they are drilling down Harry's toe nails. It was bad, people. Real bad.
That evening we had family over for cake and ice cream. Danny made an amazing cake for Cole. It was a vision that Cole had helped him realize because he and Cole sat down a few days beforehand and sketched out the "camping cake" that Cole was begging for. We figured it especially appropriate because Cole was now entering Cub Scouts. It was two tiers with pine trees, a bridge over a running stream with candied rocks and even has a fire (made of candles) and mallows on a stick. I don't think Cole realizes that most dads don't make cakes like this. Lucky boy!

Rae and Raevyn. My toes were so cute :)
It was a very exhausting day but after everyone left, I felt so good inside. Cole got to have his special day and the next day we were going to be a family of four. Life was never going to be the same.
