Weddings and Pokemon

I know I always say this, but I think this latest wedding cake of Danny's is my favorite. Even though the decorating process is pretty easy, it looks impressive and the "shabby chic" look is still pretty popular so that's a huge bonus.

When we got the cake to Alpine, we found the reception home in a swanky neighborhood. The yard was meticulously kept and it turns out the owners of the home weren't even related to the groom {who is the son of my dad's cousin}. They just knew each other through institute. What a great guy, letting people use his yard for receptions. They had music piping out onto the patio and we got the cake set up under a gazebo. The florist just sent a small bouquet of flowers labeled "wedding cake". We've never had to do the flowers! We've just watched it done a few times so I felt like we could handle it. Especially because Danny had been using a picture that the groom emailed him as a reference point for the cake. I asked for a pair of scissors and went to town.

I was basically just cutting stems and sticking things in randomly that I thought might look good. We were both actually really happy with how it all turned out. We made some minor adjustments but overall, it was pretty fast and painless.

It was actually pretty fun and I wouldn't mind doing it again {if the flowers were this gorgeous}.

I always get a little nervous thinking about the newlyweds cutting into these cakes when they're on such a small cake stand. I'm pretty sure the stand was a 10" and the base of the cake was a 14". We just warned them to be careful so it wouldn't tip over. My cousin Leia attended the reception with Uncle Craig and she said the cake was as pretty in person as the photo shows and also that it tasted as good as it looked.

Shay contacted Danny through Facebook about doing a cake for his niece. I'm not real familiar with Pokemon {okay, I'm 0% familiar with it} but he said she loved Pikachu. Danny put this together really quickly on Saturday between family commitments and even did some hand painting on the actual character. Shay was really happy with it. Typically special occasion cakes aren't big money makers because people never want to pay a lot of money for a birthday or baby shower cake and I totally understand that. That's why Danny doesn't do many of them but it's nice to add some different things to his portfolio and it gives him good experience.
