Happenings
Today was a pretty great day. I got to go back to bed after getting Danny and Cole sent off to their respective destinations. I'm still trying to kick this infection once and for all...hopefully we're about done! I'm starting to get my energy back and I can tell my mood is improving so I'm sure Danny is happy about that :) Sunday morning I woke up to this:
Yep, Cole is reading chapter books. He read this particular one in just one morning. This is a big deal. Sponge Bob is such a good listener. {Yes, we're evil parents and let him watch Sponge Bob}. The other day, a neighbor girl came over and walked into Cole's room. The first thing out of her mouth was a loud gasp followed quickly by "Sponge Bob is bad! He swears. We're not allowed to watch that at my house". So there you have it :) We're evil. By the way, for the record--there is no swearing on that show...since all 3 of you who still read my blog believed it.
We had parent-teacher conference last week and had great feedback from Cole's teacher. Aside from a few incidents where he has gotten in trouble for messing around in the boys bathroom or talking too much {social, much?} he is doing awesome. The entire second grade splits up into groups for reading, spelling and math. Cole is doing 4th grade spelling with a group of only 4 other kids and is reading comfortably on the 3rd grade level. We're very happy about that. Cole LOVES to read. He wakes up so stinkin' early every morning and just lays in bed and reads. Sometimes I'll catch him reading to himself out loud and even when he's alone he uses so much expression it makes me laugh. He is very proud of the fact that he understands when to change the inflection of his voice. He also loves art and draws all over his homework. He is so naturally talented with creativity. I consider myself a creative person but not necessarily ARTISTIC. I can barely draw a stick figure but Danny can sketch something from memory and impress me every time. I was even going gaga over the Halloween art that he drew on the windows with washable markers. Thank goodness Cole has his Dad. Maybe someday he'll be busting out birthday cakes like this:
This bottom one is so you can see the groove in his legs. Just like the real legos. Everything is perfectly to scale and was done without any tracing or pattern. He literally just looked at it, and carved the cake, added arms and hands from rice crispy treats and then star-tipped the heck out of it.
ANYwho, back to my day. I am in desperate need of some boots. Not snow boots but boots that I can wear to church with a dress and not look like Napoleon Dynamite. I headed over to Savers and to my surprise they were having a Veteran's Day Sale. 50% off all clothing, shoes and housewares. SCORE! I got some boots for $5.00 {after the discount} that I think will work out perfectly. Heaven knows I'm not above wearing recycled clothing and I am very grateful for this blessing. I was able to get Danny more work pants (he thinks 2 pairs isn't enough...so demanding) and a cute shirt for Cole. For the record, Savers is totally cheaper than the D.I. I'm not sure why. So, if you're into thrifty clothing purchases--consider Savers.
Next up: I got a new job! Yipeeeee. I quit 1-800-Contacts in September {long story...if you want the details, you can email or call me}. I've been enjoying my free time but I knew it wouldn't last forever. I fully expected to take a month or two off to gather my thoughts and sanity which had been strewn about and then get back to work. Here's the thing: I need a job that isn't stressful. We know that one of the reasons I have struggled getting pregnant is because I'm a worrier. A stress case. A BASKET case, more like. So, I took some time off, collected myself, spent some much needed time with my scriptures and I feel like myself again. Phew. Mental institution averted! I have re-learned some things about myself. I need to get out of the house everyday. I need human interaction. I need SUNLIGHT. I thrive off of interpersonal relationships. I'm just not happy being alone all day. Even if I am doing things to improve myself like reading the scriptures and exercising. Something has been missing. I'm a social person and to me it feels like an essential part of my livelihood So, I was on Facebook about a week ago and an older woman in my ward mentioned how she had gotten a job with the Jordan School District. It sparked my curiosity and I applied online. I emailed a friend in my ward who is the Assistant Principal at the Elementary school across the busy street from us. I wanted to name drop and use her as a reference. A few days later I got a job offer over the phone from a 2 minute phone "interview". I'm super excited. It's 17 hours/week and I'll be helping out in the copy room, and doing lunch recess on the playground. I'd love to work into a reading/teaching aid position in the future but this is perfect for what our needs are right now. I'm hoping I can manage life with fewer hours and being MUCH closer to home while still being able to get out of the house. I can still volunteer at Cole's school in the afternoons which is really important to me. I love being able to help out and being involved. I have Orientation on Wednesday and I start on Thursday! Hurray :)

Tonight a sweet girl from my ward dropped off a special treat with a sweet note:
Can I tell you how much that meant to me? I gave her a hug and she timidly ran off, lol.

Hope you are all doing well. It sounds like Cole is doing Awesome in school. Keep it that way, keep him excited. I have 2 that love school, 1 that could do without, and 1 undecided. Life is much easier for the 2 that do well and thrive there. The other one is like beating my head against a wall to get him to do homework and studying; he just truly doesn't care.
